Rejection

So, you have completed your search - and found your birthparent or the child you gave up for adoption. You have read every book and article there is regarding successful reunions and having followed all the advice you finally arrange to meet the one you have been searching for.

The emotional roller-coaster has begun……….you meet, and this can be a wonderful experience - you get on well and arrange to meet again. This continues for a while. You even start to exchange birthday/Christmas cards and put arrangements in hand for family get togethers.

Then………..something seems to go wrong. The phone calls/letters begin to tail off, and instead of holding meaningful conversations on a weekly basis you reaslise that you haven't actually been in contact for months!
Should you phone? Should you write, what has gone wrong?

Basically, once the euphoria wears off, one of the parties involved realises that they have nothing in common with the other, apart from the "biological bond" - and this just is not enough.

Unfortunately, some "successful" reunions end up with another drift apart and, at least one party, feels rejection.

The only way to cope with this is to accept that you did at least find the person you were looking for. You have learnt something about them and their lives and families. Do not "push" contact. Send the occasional letter to keep in touch, (stay friendly) and hope that they will reply. If they do not, then you MUST accept that they do not actually want you as part of their lives. This is hard, but it is better to move on. If your family or partner have supported you through your search and reunion then confide in them as to how you feel, this will help you come to terms with the feeling of rejection.

It is important to note that the above is exceptional - usually a successful renunion leads to a successful relationship.
