Re-union
Question...
I found my birthmother a little while ago. We met for the first time last week but the re-union did not go well. What can I do?
Although my birthmother agreed to meet me she was rather reluctant and I felt that the whole meeting was "awkward". It is not what I exprected, after all she did give birth to me and must owe me something. - "Edward L" - South Gloucestereshire.
The Team's Answer...
Edward,
Un-married mothers were made to feel that they had committed the worst sin in the world. Your mother may have been forced to give you up and has carried the guilt for many years.
I do not know her circumstances as you did not outline them, but she probably now has a family of her own and your contact with her would have come as a shock.
Write her a letter thanking her for meeting you and request that you can keep in contact. Build from this at a gentle speed! However, do not expect her to be the long lost mother - you are a stranger to her and she to you. Take things slowly now and hopefully, just like a new friendship, you will be able to build a relationship which will last.
