How do I start a search?
Question...
I am sixteen and do not get on with adoptive parents. I have asked them for information regarding my adoption and they are not forthcoming with information.
How do I start a search for my real parents?
The Team's Answer...
We are sorry to learn that you do not get on with your adoptive parents. Most teenagers do not get on with their parents! it is part of growing up!
However, if part of the problem is not knowing the details of your adoption - and your adoptive parents are not prepared to help (they may have a good reason), then you will have to wait a little longer to instigate a search.
The law in this country (U.K) requires that an adoptee is eighteen years or over before they are allowed information from their adoption records.
We suggest that you try and talk to your adoptive parents and explain how you feel. Explain to them that you are interested in knowing your past and that in no way does this reflect on them.
We are sure that, at the right time, they will be able to give you some information, until then be patient.
When you are eighteen, you can then ask Social Services for details from your adoption records. You will be offered councilling after which, you will be able to instigate your search.
